Permanent Hiatus [Dec. 29th, 2009|03:25 pm]
Discussions of Stargate Atlantis fanfic

lunabee34
I make this post to permanently close sga_talk due to waning interest and participation by the comm's members.

We had three good years, y'all, of conversation and criticism, of making new friends, of finding new stories that were sometimes outside our comfort zones--and for that I thank you. I thank you for never making this comm a site of wank although the subject matter could very easily lead to wank and hurt feelings. I thank you for making such insightful comments about characterization and the writing process and the source material. I thank you for making me think about the stories we write and how and why we write them. Thank you for writing these stories, for giving us something to talk about in the first place.

Thanks to lyrstzha for being the best co-mod a gal could hope for and for the all the hard work she put into wrangling conversations. Thanks to beadattitude for stepping in this last year and running the comm when Lyr and I were unable. Beautiful job! Thanks also to zillah975 for the staggering amount of work she did putting together a masterlist of discussed fics.

The comm will never be deleted so that our conversations are preserved.

Again, thank you for making this comm match my vision for it. I'm a little sad that our success was so shortlived but ultimately, very grateful that we accomplished so much.

*hugs*

Small break [Sep. 18th, 2009|05:26 pm]
Discussions of Stargate Atlantis fanfic

Sorry, y'all, but we're going to be taking a short hiatus for the rest of the month. Discussion will resume as usual in October. For alas, your two veteran mods, lunabee34 and myself, are drowning in work and deadlines, and your new mod beadatttude is injured. So, I will see you back here in October. Meanwhile, remember that our September gen discussion of michelel72's "Remorse" is still ongoing HERE.

Excerpts:

ariadne83 says: This is a brilliant story but I struggled to get past the beginning because frankly, the idea of the device made me feel ill even before it went so wrong. The idea of people in positions of power - like Sam and Hammond - manipulating someone who has to trust them and work with them, and trying to force him to think the "correct" way just made my skin crawl, because it's a very slippery slope.

lunabee34 says: This is such a sad story. McKay really has learned his lesson; the device has taught him what he needs to know, what losing a teammate is like. I don't think Sam is demonized for wanting him to know that. I think we all wanted him to know that when we watched this episode. Her use of the device isn't predicated by something as base and ugly and revenge either, though I think that certainly plays a part. Instead, she truly wants him to understand so that he can make better decisions as part of the SGC.

Remember also that our slash discussion of "At the Violet Hour" is ongoing HERE.

Excerpts:

beadattitude says: I loved that Rodney was the one who picked up on John's change - though John did give him a leading clue - and that John was beautiful in Rodney's eyes just as he is. I agree with Lyr that there's a sweetness to Rodney's reaction that's, wow, everything you could hope for in a friend; a willingness to go down the path with you.

lyrstzha says: It strikes me as totally reasonable that the first order of business when one has been accidentally genderswapped is to experiment a bit with one's new body---I know I would. So, I sympathized with John's journey of discovery, and found his trials and conclusions interesting. It's particularly intriguing the way Lin writes the difference between visceral and cerebral desires; part of John's mind still follows the same paths it did when he was a man, but there's another part with a whole new set of instincts and drives.

Remember also that our very much neglected discussion of "Caught" is ongoing HERE. Please to help me out with that, people.

Excerpts:

lyrstzha says: The last thing I want to say about this story is that I love the way it is entirely in female voices. Don't get me wrong, I love our male characters. But I think it's good to center some stories on the women, as this happens all too infrequently in canon. Even aside from the femslash aspect, which I would naturally expect to shift the story's focus to female characters, I found it very striking that this story does just that. If you notice, though the male characters are present in spirit, none of them actually get any lines or appear in person. The women talk about them, and report what they say or what they're up to, and the way this is done is affectionate rather than dismissive. This gives me the sense that the male characters are loved, but simply not up for their turn in the spotlight this time around. I like that feeling, that balance.

Hey, all! This is just to say that the August discussion will be a bit late, on account of how both lunabee34 and I will be off at writercon. Regular service will resume upon our return. I hope to see some of y'all there---say hello if you see one of us!
